Rough Road Ahead

Over the past week the government led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki attempted to assert its authority over Muqtada al-Sadr’s militia in Basra.  The military operation Iraq’s second largest and most economically vital city proved a major setback for the central authority.  The results portend darker troubles on the horizon.  Read CFR’s daily brief here.
